Choosing a European Direct-Debit Solution

If you are considering providing easy access for the millions of potential European users who will not or cannot use their credit cards online, read on.

Global economic conditions have all companies tied to the USDollar seeking to begin or improve their Euro and Pound revenue streams in markets with only 25 percent credit-card penetration by many estimates. A much higher percentage of Europeans possess bank accounts and use them to pay the majority of their bills. An option is to optimize the direct debit payment process for e-commerce sites to generate the most revenue possible on a global basis to continue growth.

“The process of withdrawing funds directly from a user’s bank account without any type of card or other vehicle based on an online purchase is the most popular and widely accepted payment method in Europe,” states Michael Reul, co-founder of Webbilling.com B.V. “Because most of Europe now completes transactions virtually without paper, Europeans are used to this type of billing, and people keep their bank accounts practically their whole lives. In spite of recent incursions in credit card proliferation, the advantages of real direct debit billing over credit card billing for the EU just keep mounting.”

Some companies offer ‘direct pay’ in many different countries, but this is a far more laborious method for surfers where the potential user is required to physically wire money from their bank account to the merchant and should not be a primary offering unless direct debit is not possible, and where countries still require a physical signature. Essentially, they must go to their bank online or in person, initiate and send a wire, and then wait in some cases several days before the wire is received and access to the online site is granted or the order is fulfilled. More importantly, there is not automatic recurring billing with this option, so the user must go through the same process every time they want to initiate a transaction - if they choose to renew their membership – and the idea of a spontaneous purchase along with instant access is minimized in these cases.

The Cultural Divide

When it comes to personal financial management and payment methods in everyday life there is a different culture in Europe. Whether it is better or worse is a great debate, but it is different. And if you plan to generate revenue in Europe you must understand the European culture.

Everyone pays with cash (in stores) or with their bank accounts. Utility companies withdraw payments directly from savings accounts, as do landlords and any other authorized entity. Online e-commerce enterprises can also have the ability to withdraw payments directly from users’ savings accounts. Again, no types of cards or other vehicles are required, just deduct right from the same bank accounts where your customers’/subscribers’ employers also directly deposit their salaries! Webbilling.com reports another positive note - the retention of European direct-debit users is much higher than that of the continent’s credit-card users.

When you are considering EU processing of any kind, complete some due diligence. How long has the processor been operating in Europe?  How well maintained and broad-based are their banking/financial relationships?  Do they attempt to understand your specific needs?  Check out their join pages as if you were a surfer from each country in which they provide services. What happens to your user after he clicks to their join page?  What if there is a geo-targeting error; can the user correct their country and change language on the join page?  For instance, what if the user is a German traveling in the USA?  Can you set the prices for your EU joins independently of your other products, or do you have to use direct conversion?  Can you customize the join page with your own translated text and proprietary custom graphics?  I’ve talked to sponsors who have never even seen their alternative join pages.  If you don’t have time to check them yourself, have your CTO, CFO, or another designated employee monitor every join page associated with your sites. If your geo-targeting is too limiting or you cannot change country/language on the join page, you will need to have someone check in each country for you, or use a proxy server to access the join page as if you were a potential user in each country. Know the pros and cons of every aspect of your business.

The client-merchant should be able to continue using any current billing solutions, and for example, integrate the additional Webbilling direct debit capability without requiring anything of their webmasters. Webbilling helps manage the entire direct-debit process for its clients, handling all transactions, from withdrawing money directly from bank accounts to managing collection letters (in association with local attorneys) for chargebacks. The client-merchant continues to operate on its existing management software, receives bi-weekly disbursement from Webbilling, and makes webmaster payouts employing their usual method.  Any chargebacks are immediately processed through the collection department and because of the pin call security, principal amounts are successfully collected, plus bank and chargeback costs in the majority of cases. Any user who does not join by direct debit is returned to the client-merchant or sent directly to another biller in the client-merchant’s billing cascade as specified in their return URL.

When making your alternative processor selection, make sure you really know what you want. Specialization continues to affect every facet of our industry, and credit card processing is now provided by many global companies with increasingly competitive discount rates. Real, specialized Direct Debit – defined as withdrawing funds directly from the users’ bank accounts with real-time access in multiple countries is rare, and remember, even though we call it alternative billing, direct debit is not an ‘alternative’ billing method for the European markets; it is the primary preferred method while credit cards are ‘alternative.’ And make certain you have full control of your traffic and how you want to convert it. Make sure you can continue converting all countries with your existing low-rate credit card solution – even the countries where you implement a direct debit solution. Keep your low rates for credit card processing for all countries, and shop for a discount rate for direct debit as low as 10% depending on your volume.

What happens when another billing company goes out of business?

We all know about billing companies popping up and the deaths of both large and small companies in the last couple of years. Can you name a processing company that allows you to own the customer data?  If your biller went out of business could you go to another direct debit company and continue billing your database? Can you think of a company with that kind of confidence in their service? In a fair and straightforward solution, all merchants are ultimately independent, because they are in the possession of all data and hence there is no risk involved – and they are always in control of their own traffic. You know your cost per acquisition to get that user to your join page.  Pick a direct debit provider that allows you to utilize all the marketing advantages of credit card joins.  Recurring, free trials, cross sales, upsells, pay-per-minute and -download, tokens, and one-click encrypted joins for specials and cancellation marketing. I think the key word here is F-L-E-X-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y. The processor is working for you and should also actively engage in monetization of chargebacks on your behalf.
